How to actually run this at a table
The card comes up, gives you two endings, and everyone commits before the discussion starts.
Four rules make the difference between a real evening and a round of shrugging.
- Answer first, argue second. Everybody says A or B before anybody explains. Once one person has reasoned out loud, the rest of the table agrees with the reasoning instead of their own instinct.
- “Both are bad” is not an answer. That is the premise. A card where one option was fine would not be in this deck. Refusing to choose is choosing whatever happens by default, and the table should say so.
- Debate is not optional and silence is not one. The choice is the beginning of the card. The person who answered owes the table a reason, and the table owes them a follow-up.
- Start with the person who thinks they are the most ethical. The deck’s own instruction, and it works: whoever volunteers is the one most willing to be argued with.
Sixty cards is not one night if you are playing it properly.
Who this deck is not for
Most game nights, plainly. It is not an icebreaker — it asks strangers to reveal their moral architecture before they have learned each other’s surnames, and the honest answer to the first card is usually a joke to escape it. It is not a party deck either: it needs a room where one voice at a time can be heard, and it dies against music and eight simultaneous conversations.
It will stall a group that does not enjoy arguing. Some people find disagreement over values unpleasant rather than fun, and this deck offers them a full evening of it. It is also not safe to open on people you are about to spend a long time with — a flatmate discovering on card twelve that you would push the stranger is a thing you both then live with.
It is for four to six people who already like each other enough to disagree properly, late enough that nobody is performing, with the sound off. On that night it is the best deck on the site.
